A Merit Shop Multi-Scope Subcontractor

A QBC foreman looks over a job site.

Mission & Overview

Our Mission is to Simplify Construction so Our Clients can Focus on What’s Next.

In other words, the easier we can make building for our clients, the more they can build. It's just that simple.

Quest Building Corp (QBC) is a merit shop commercial subcontractor serving Wisconsin and Northern Illinois since 1998. We provide multi-scope services including rough carpentry, finish carpentry, cabinetry, countertops, and flooring for developers, general contractors, property managers, architects, and designers.

What is a Merit Shop? Understanding Our Philosophy

A merit shop is a non-union construction company that hires, compensates, and promotes employees based on their skills, performance, attitude, and commitment to quality rather than union affiliation or seniority. At QBC, we believe career trajectory should be determined by a person's abilities and drive to succeed, not by time on the job or union membership.

Merit Shop vs Union: Our Approach

We have nothing against union shops. It's simply a difference in philosophy. Many of our clients are union general contractors, and we partner effectively with both union and non-union firms.

For our clients, the merit shop approach means working with crews selected for their skills and commitment, not because of union requirements. For our team members, it means advancement is earned through quality work, problem-solving ability, and embodying our core values.

This philosophy aligns with our broader belief that construction should be merit-based at every level: we earn your business through reliable execution, our crews earn advancement through skilled work, and our reputation is built one quality project at a time.

Our Core Tenets: How We Operate

At QBC, our decisions and actions are guided by twelve core tenets. They're the principles that shape how we hire, how we train, how we execute projects, and how we treat our clients and each other.

Servant - Selflessly help others

We show up to make our clients' lives easier, our teammates' jobs smoother, and our projects more successful.

Benevolence - Desire to do good to others

We actively seek opportunities to create positive outcomes for everyone involved in our projects.

Transparency - Be open and honest

We communicate clearly and honestly, even when the news isn't what you want to hear.

Commitment - See it through

When we commit to a project, a deadline, or a quality standard, we follow through.

Safety - Protect you, me, and our workplace

Every crew member goes home safe, every day.

Integrity - Always do what is right

We do the right thing, even when no one is watching and even when it costs us.

Accountability - Take ownership of actions and results

We own our work, our skills, our materials. No excuses.

Initiative - See a need, fill a need

We don't wait for someone else to solve problems.

Stewardship - Protect and enhance resources

We treat every project, every material, and every relationship as a valuable resource to be protected.

Innovative - Make something better

We constantly look for better methods, better materials, and better systems.

Knowledge - Acquire skills and understanding

We invest in continuous learning.

Wisdom - Leverage experiences and knowledge

Wisdom is knowledge applied. It's learning from our 25+ years of projects.

These twelve tenets are practical guides that show up daily in how we communicate with clients, how we coordinate with other trades, how we train new crew members, and how we handle challenges on the jobsite. They're why clients book us years in advance. They're why our team takes pride in the QBC name.
